Interactive Panels 

Flat Panels are coming!  Roanoke City Schools is sailing into 2021-2022 with myViewBoard, the cloud-based digital white board companion for the new ViewSonic touch displays.

In-service: All Aboard myViewBoard - Join us for a 1-hour virtual class on how to use the software and sign up for open lab hours to get hands-on training with All Hands-on Deck. Once you have completed the 1-hour in-service, you can check out the bells and whistles in the recertification class Setting Sail.

Course Description: Learn to personalize and create a template for your Canvas courses. Participants will use hyperlinks, embed videos, create buttons and simple bitmojis (not interactive) to use in a Canvas courses. Creating a course with easy navigation will be one of the main topics in this class. You will also learn how to save the content you have created this year to use as a resource in the future. 
Assignment: Create a template using graphics, buttons, and other visual components.

Course Description: Teachers will create lessons using SMART Learning Suite that can be shared with students at school or virtually. The lessons will include activities from the SMART Learning Suite. These lessons can be added to Clever or Teams as a link so students can access from anywhere.
Assignment: Aligning the lessons with SOLs you teach, create multiple page notebooks for your students. Use the lessons with your students and write a reflection.

Course Description: Stop Animation is a fun way for students to show what they know by creating short movies.  This is a high interest and hands on way to review.  Teachers will need access to an iPad or Smartphone for this class.
Assignment: Teacher will create a Stop Animation video to introduce yourself to your students in your classroom in the 2021-2022 school year.

Assignment: Teacher will create a presentation to introduce yourself to your students in your classroom in the 2021-2022 school year and two other documents.

Course Description: This will be an in-person back to the basics class to provide you with the best support to master Office 365. This will show teachers how to navigate Office 365 and create three types of Word documents.
We will also show how to find and share your files in Office 365.
Assignment: Teachers will be required to create the following documents and share them in Office 365. 

  1. Word document – worksheet or letter 

  2. Word document – Newsletter or Flyer 

  3. PowerPoint – containing 10 slides and at least 1 transition 

  4. Excel – a time card with formulas to add their time for this class

Course Description:  Green screen provides opportunities for teachers to use their imagination and digital skills to provide engaging instruction. It also allows students to use their imagination and digital skills to discuss, evaluate and reflect on their learning. This course will teach you how to bring your instruction to life using green screen and the iMovie app. 
Assignment: Teachers will create 5 green screen movies or images that can be used in their classrooms and for online and in person learning.

Course Description: Get students thinking critically with coding. Coding builds problem-solving skills that help in all subject areas. It is a great way to learn to analyze problems and come up with ways to solve them. Students learn how to plan and organize thoughts when they are coding. Coding is a basic literacy skill in the digital age we are in. Teach students coding - beyond Angry Birds. 
Assignment: Develop four lesson plans based on the coding options in Code.org.

Course Description:  Podcasts can be a powerful educational tool for both students and teachers. They cover relevant content in real-time conversational speed, which makes them excellent to use for improving listening comprehension skills.  This course will provide insight on ways to incorporate podcasts into the participants' professional learning as well as their instructional delivery to students.  Since podcasts are also easily accessible on the web as well as on the go with tablets and phones, participants will easily be able to complete assignments for this course. 
Assignment: Participants will listen to, provide feedback on, search for and share podcasts on various topics.

Course Description: Want an easy way to create alternative assessments using technology? Come learn how to use Adobe Spark. Your students can use this free online program to create presentations with narration. Great for alternative assessments, research projects, storytelling, reading fluency, and presentations.  
Assignment: Create three Adobe Spark projects that  support SOLs you teach. Create three lesson plans to use with your students that help them demonstrate knowledge of SOLs they are required to understand.

Course: Coding as a Second Language (CSL)

Course Description: Kids today grow up surrounded by this technology and are consumers of technology tools. We want to turn our consumers into creators! It is essential that today’s students learn not only to be effective users of technology but masters of it: They should be able to control it, to shape it, or in other words to program it. The very basics of computer programming can be learned by playing games. Today’s technology can teach our students (and us) complex computer logic by masking it as a level up challenge! 
Assignment: In this class we will learn the basics of coding using online/web-based games.  We will also learn about the VA Computer Science SOLs for our grade level and use them to help build Computer Science into our lessons and routines.

I bet you think you have gotten to the end of the internet! But wait there is more! I have looked all over and found several MATH sites that you may not have heard of.  Each of these are FREE to use, EASY to navigate and preloaded with the curriculum you may need. Your kids will thank you for these resources! 
Assignment:  The teacher will explore the curated math sites and give feedback. When applicable,  the teachers will also  incorporate new math sites into their lesson plans and give feedback.

Course Description: Canvas has a new tool! Nearpod is icing on top for interactive presentations and assessments. Teachers can create multimedia presentations including draw it (students annotate directly on a slide), collaboration boards, and more.  Participants in this recertification course will learn how to create engaging lessons for their students using Nearpod.  They will also learn how to add Nearpod lessons to their Canvas courses as an external assignment.   
Assignment: Participants will be required to complete the following: complete tutorials in the Canvas Modules, find a lesson in Nearpod and add it to their library, create four lessons with at least four slides, and document a time log.

Course Description: Nearpod allows for a flawless connection to your Office 365 tools. Participants in this recertification course will learn to create engaging lessons for their students using content from their OneDrive, incorporate Immersive Reader, integrate Forms and other Office 365 tools within their Nearpod lessons.  Participants will also learn to utilize Flipgrid in their Nearpod lessons.  A basic knowledge of Nearpod and Office 365 will be beneficial for participants in this class. 
Assignment: Participants will be required to complete the following: complete tutorials in the Canvas modules, create five lessons with at least four slides, add an assignment in their Canvas course using at least one Nearpod lesson and complete a course time log.  Lessons should include at least 1 of the integration of the following tools taught in this class:

  • Flipgrid

  • Forms

  • Original Sway or PowerPoint

Course Description: Imagine a class were “la-la land” is boring compared to the real world class. Using formative assessment strategies essentially eliminates hand raising and cuts down on day dreaming. In this class we will explore web-based resources that will simplify all student response activities and promote student engagement.   
Topics will include SMART Learning Suite, Kahoot, Quizizz, Blooket and more! 
Assignment: Create 10 original games using the resources mentioned above. At least one game from each resource must be created.  Document time log.

Course Description: Canvas has been a definite game changer in more ways than one. In this course we will explore a variety of free web-based resources to level up the creativity and engagement for our virtual learners. Participants will learn how to embed instructional games into pages, add an element of gamification to Canvas with Badgr Open Badges, and transform modules into role-playing games (RPGs).
Assignment:

  • Create one or more gamified module(s). The gamified module must include an overall theme similar to an RPG. 

  • Earn Points and Badges by exploring provided modules. 

  • Document 20 hours in time log.

This course is specifically designed with administrators in mind. Learn how to build and maintain a Canvas course that will be a one-stop shop for your faculty to access important information, Monday Memos, school calendars, professional learning and more! Assignment: Administrators will be given a Canvas course template. They work through a series of assignment tasks that will require them to personalize the template into a Canvas course they can share with their faculty.
