STUDENT TEACH IN ROANOKE CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

All practicum, student teacher, and/or intern applicants must be enrolled in a Virginia Department of Education approved college/university education program, with field supervisors provided by their College/University.  The College/University must also have a current contact on file with the Roanoke City Public School District. All arrangements to accept student teachers are made through Human Resources in conjunction with the College and university placement offices.  This includes all observations, practicum, intern, and student teaching requests.  Please see description of placement options below:

Classroom observation

The placement of college students for the purposes of classroom observation is an agreement made between the college/university placement office, instructor and the building level principal.  Necessary documentation of this process includes a written request for placement specifying the student’s name and the semester duration, dates, and observation times.  Since this is observation only and no students will work directly with Roanoke City Public School students, a background check of the college student is not necessary.

Student Teaching/Internships/Practicum

Requests for student teaching, practicum, and internship placements are made by college/university placement officials to the Recruitment and Retention Coordinator via email (awimberly@rcps.info). 

If suitable placements can be made, the Recruitment and Retention Coordinator will communicate with building level-administration to secure an appropriate cooperative teacher assignment.  The college is then notified of placement information.  Since interns will
