RCPS+ for Elementary Students (current Preschool - 5th grade students):

Hours: 8am - 2pm

Doors will open at 7:45am each day, Monday-Friday. Please send a note to your child's RCPS+ site about afternoon transportation information. Please clearly mark whether your child will be a car rider, walker or bus rider and where they will ride the bus to.

English: Students will get lost in the stories of historical figures who fought for important causes. They will imagine faraway lands and ancient civilizations while listening to stories that connect us all. Students will read, write, and discuss daily. By connecting with the world around them, students will Imagine Their Story!

Math:  Students will take a journey into the world of mathematics through children’s literature. From the story of Sir Cumference to solving the mystery of The Math Curse, we will use children’s literature to investigate mathematical concepts. We will problem solve with playing cards, build with Keva Planks, solve the mystery of the secret number, and jump into STEM with fairy tales, chain reactions, and building brick Fridays.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics):  Each day, students will explore robotics and electricity, engineering challenges, virtual reality, coding, and science experimentation, in addition to art, music, and physical education.  Through story books, students will look at the lives of scientists, engineers, and explorers – both ancient and modern - to see how STEAM fits into their story.

Locations:  Elementary sites for RCPS+ will be limited to the schools below. The location where your student will attend is based on the school they attend during the regular school year:

Crystal Spring (Crystal Spring & Highland)
Fallon Park (Fallon & Morningside)
Garden City (Garden City Only)
Grandin Court (Fishburn & Grandin Court)
Lincoln Terrace (Lincoln Terrace Only)
Preston Park (Preston Park Only)
RAMS (Monterey & RAMS)
Round Hill (Hurt Park & Round Hill)
Virginia Heights (Virginia Heights & Wasena)
Westside (Fairview & Westside)

RCPS+ for Middle School Students (current 6th – 8th grade students):

Hours: 9am - 3pm

English:  This summer, our students will have an incredible opportunity to encounter authors from a variety of backgrounds who write in an assortment of genres, from lyric to graphic novels and realistic to futuristic fiction.  Reading, writing, and research will be based on current, popular, and fun literature that will prompt students to go on a quest for adventure that will fuel their imaginations and allow them to dabble in other disciplines such as fine arts and history.  Students will review skills while moving forward with chances to dig deeper into communication, reading, writing, and research.  This epic journey will allow for creativity in thought, writing, discussion, and projects permitting students to express themselves in a variety of means.  Students will have opportunities for collaboration, debate, and video storytelling.  They will also create poetry, presentations, performances, blogs, and graphics  as they imagine their own stories.  Let the fun begin!

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics): Three-week units will be packed with activities for students to explore robotics, scientific experimentation, rocketry, mapmaking, and other related fields. Technical reading and writing will be a part of the STEAM classes.  We invite you to see where STEAM fits into your story!

Math: Students will experience three-week units where they will investigate and understand math concepts in a hands-on, “make sense of numbers” format. Lessons will include Math literature to help students connect the dots between math concepts and the real world. Students will discover how math is embedded in stories and participate in activities and projects related to the concepts found in the literature. From ancient Greeks to modern business tycoons and athletes, we will discover the story of mathematicians and help you to make math a part of your story.

Location:  Middle School RCPS+ will take place at Patrick Henry High School.

About RCPS+

RCPS+ is a rich instructional program designed to provide motivational, engaging, and hands-on activities for students in a supportive environment. The program engages students in relevant, problem-solving activities that promote critical thinking and creativity to enrich the learning experiences of all students!
