A bunch of trophiesWhat a year!  Our staff and students have been recognized on a national, state, regional, and local level.  There have so many awards and accolades, it is easy to forget.  With that in mind, we've put together an extensive list.  Roanoke City Public Schools is extremely proud.  You should be too.  We can't wait to see what the rest of the school year brings!


NATIONAL AWARDS/ACCOLADES: 

Nicole Doherty of Patrick Henry High School was named the 2019 Outstanding Teacher of American History by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Caroline Eschenbach of Virginia Heights Elementary received the prestigious Milken Educator Award.

The NAMM Foundation named RCPS one of the Best Communities for Music Education for the 7th consecutive year!

STATE AWARDS/ACCOLADES: 

All schools are fully accredited.

Mary Grace Giles of Patrick Henry and the Roanoke Valley Governor's School was the Grand Award winner at the State Science Fair.

Catherine Burton of Monterey Elementary is the recipient of the Virginia Council for Learning Disabilities Early Career Special Educator Award.

The Patrick Henry High School Forensics Team won its 5th state title.

The Patrick Henry High School Swim Team won its 4th consecutive state title.

Noah Bowers of Patrick Henry High School won two state titles in swimming.

Chauncey Wilson of Patrick Henry High School was the state runner-up in Wrestling.

Crystal Spring Elementary received the 2018 Governor's Award of Education Excellence.  Only 14 schools state-wide were recognized.  Grandin Court Elementary was awarded the Board of Education Excellence Award and Wasena Elementary received the Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award.

REGIONAL AWARDS/ACCOLADES:

Jamie Nichols of Lucy Addison Middle School is the 2019 Regional Teacher of the Year.

The William Fleming High School Girls Basketball Team won the Regional Championship.

Joanne Villers of the Roanoke Valley Governor's School is the 2019 Outstanding High School Chemistry Teacher of the Year by the Virginia Blue Ridge Section of the American Chemical Society.

Luke Gardner and Luke Suess of Patrick Henry and the Roanoke Valley Governor's School won the Grand Award at the 2019 Western Virginia Regional Science Fair.

LOCAL AWARD:

Sheila Tinsley of ROTEC was named the 2019 American Red Cross Educator Hero Award recipient.
