EVENT: Jackson Middle School One of Four Schools in Virginia to Receive $6,000 Laura Bush Foundation Grant to Improve Multi-cultural Reading Materials
SCHOOL: Stonewall Jackson Middle School
DATE/TIME:
DETAILS: Stonewall Jackson Middle School recently received a $6,000 grant from the Laura Bush foundation to meet the reading needs of their growing multi-cultural student body. Jackson Middle is one of four schools in our state to receive this honor and the only middle school in Virginia. In 2009, Jackson became the central site for all middle school English language learners (ELL) in the city. As a result, the needs in the media center drastically changed. Jackson now has students who just arrived to the U.S. and speak no English.
The grant will be used to provide a variety of picture books and folktale collections which would encourage reading and promote multicultural understanding. Providing students with up-to-date books on foreign countries will also help fill a void. The grant money will also be used to provide more books that can inspire students to be forward-thinking. Jackson hopes to expand its career reading section with biographies of people from other countries who have succeeded. The biographies would hopefully inspire children with diverse backgrounds to make goals for their future.
