EVENT:  RCPS Raises More than $3,000 for Red Cross
DETAILS:  Collectively Roanoke City Public Schools collected $3, 614.43- more than doubling the amount that was raised last year for the Red Cross. Fairview Elementary came in first place raising $680, Fallon Park Elementary came in second with $610 and Stonewall Jackson Middle School came in third raising just over $600.

EVENT:  Fishburn Park Elementary Hosts “An Evening with the Arts”
SCHOOL: Fishburn Park Elementary

DETAILS:  Fishburn Park students will present a special event featuring the Strings, Choir and creative artwork. Light refreshments will be provided and the community is invited.
 
 
EVENT:  Roanoke City Preschool Program Hosts Fun Skating Informational Event for Families in the Roanoke Valley
LOCATION: Lee Hi Skate Center
DATE/TIME: April 12, 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.
DETAILS:  The community is invited to attend a free informational event for the Roanoke City Preschool Programs which is a joint program between RCPS and TAP Head Start. The event is open to parents who have preschool students and those who do not. Last year more than 600 people came out to the event to learn more about educational programs available to preschool children.

EVENT:  RCPS Art Show Featured at Jefferson Center
LOCATION: The Jefferson Center 
DATE/TIME: April 12-May 15, April 18 reception 6-7 p.m.
DETAILS:  The community is invited to see unique artwork from Roanoke City students on display at the Jefferson Center from April 12- May 15. A reception will be held on April 18 from 6-7 p.m.

EVENT:  William Fleming Hosts First-Ever Special Olympics Spring Games
LOCATION: William Fleming
DATE/TIME: April 13, 10:30 a.m. opening ceremony
DETAILS:  Fleming students, the choir and drum line will help celebrate the Special Olympics spring games in the new stadium. The opening ceremony kicks off at 10:30 a.m.
More than 300 student athletes from 23 schools in the Roanoke Valley, Franklin and Bedford County will participate in this year’s event. Special Olympics Virginia, Roanoke City Public Schools and Roanoke County Schools all collaborated to put on the event which was made possible through a grant from Special Olympics, the U.S. Department of Education and Sponsor Hall Community Services.

EVENT:  Patrick Henry High School to Perform a Musical Favorite-“Grease”
SCHOOL: Patrick Henry High School
DATE/TIME: April 8-9, 15-16; 7:30 p.m.
DETAILS:   Patrick Henry theatre students will perform the energetic and heart- warming musical “Grease”. The musical is set in 1959 and follows ten working-class teenagers as they navigate the complexities of love, cars, and drive-ins. Set to an unforgettable soundtrack including songs such as You’re the One that I Want and Greased Lightning-join the Patrick Henry cast as they journey from high school students to young adults in one historic school year!

EVENT:  Breckinridge Honor Students to visit Mayor’s Office
SCHOOL: Breckinridge Middle School
DATE/TIME: April 13, 9:30 a.m.
DETAILS:  Breckinridge Middle School 8th grade honors students have been writing letters to local and state officials about issues in the community. Now they have been invited to visit the Mayor’s Office to bring their suggestions/ideas to him.

EVENT:  For the First Time RCPS Students in the VH1 “Save The Music” Strings Program along with the Patrick Henry Orchestra will be Performing at the Jefferson Center
Location: Jefferson Center
DATE/TIME: April 14, 7:30 p.m.
DETAILS:  The Jefferson Center performance will be a special opportunity for students in the new VH1 “Save the Music” strings program to showcase their talent along with the seasoned Patrick Henry Orchestra under the direction of David Lipps. Middle school string programs will be featured as well during the evening. The VH1 Save the Music Program has resulted in six RCPS elementary schools starting up music programs for students. Fairview, Hurt Park, Lincoln Terrace Elementary, Roanoke Academy, Fishburn Park and Garden City can now help students explore their musical potential thanks to the VH1 Save the Music grant-which provides about $30,000 to each school.

EVENT:  Subway and Jared Fogle present Safe Texting Campaign to Patrick Henry Drivers Ed Students
SCHOOL:  Patrick Henry High School
DATE/TIME: April 14, 1:15 p.m.
DETAILS:  Subway, Jared Fogle and local law enforcement are teaming up to teach local driver’s education students about the dangers of distracted driving. The assembly will focus on educating first time drivers about the importance of paying attention while driving and the dangers of texting while driving. Students will also be given thumb bands as reminders to not text and drive.

EVENT:  Fishburn Park Environmental Focus School Hosts Earth Week Celebration
SCHOOL: Fishburn Park Elementary  
DATE/TIME: April 18th – Opening Ceremony, April 22 – School wide Parade 1:00 p.m.
DETAILS:  Fishburn Park’s theme this year for Earth Week is “Waves of Change”. During the week students will learn how they can make a change for their Earth, community and themselves. The festivities will start with an Opening Ceremony and conclude on Earth Day with a parade focusing on ocean life.

EVENT:  Patrick Henry Marketing Students Host First-Ever Prom and Spring Fashion Show
SCHOOL: Patrick Henry High School  
DATE/TIME: April 20 at 7 p.m. and April 21 from 11 a.m.-12 noon
DETAILS:  The PH Fashion Marketing Class presents their first annual Prom and Spring Fashion show. The event will showcase the latest designs from Men’s Wearhouse, David’s Bridal, Patina’s, Bridal House, Premiere Jewelry and Strawberry. Tickets will be on sale in the cafeteria and at the door.

EVENT:  Forest Park Academy Student’s Artwork will be Featured on City Billboards after Winning “Be a Teen Now & a Parent Later Art Contest”
SCHOOL: Forest Park Academy  
DETAILS:  In an effort to educate the public about May being National Teenage Pregnancy Prevention month, Freedom First sponsored the “Be a Teen Now & a Parent Later” art contest which invited students in the area to design a billboard. The top prize has been awarded to Forest Park Academy’s Nuhad Al-Shiblawi. Al-Shiblawi’s artwork will be displayed on six billboards around town and in various malls throughout the month of May.
The top three winners all came from Forest Park Academy:
Nuhad Al-Shiblawi- 1st place, $75 Target card
Araceli Castaneda- 2nd place, $50 Target card
Cameron Ferguson- 3rd place, $25 Target card

EVENT:  Art Show & Silent Auction at Noel Taylor at Oakland
LOCATION: Noel Taylor at Oakland
DATE/TIME: May 12, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
DETAILS:  Noel Taylor students will showcase their artwork during a silent auction. The community is invited to attend and there will be light refreshment served and entertainment for guests.

EVENT:  Patrick Henry Governor’s School Student Heads to International Science Fair
SCHOOL:  Governor’s School
DATE/TIME: May 8-13
DETAILS:  Patrick Henry High School/ Governor’s School student Rachel Strauss will be competing in the International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles. Strauss will be presenting a display on how corrosive environmental items such as salt affect the strength of concrete. Strauss is an 11th grader who has been working with college and high school faculty on her science research for three years.

EVENT:  Fine Arts Festival Week Features Unique Talents of Patrick Henry Students

DETAILS:  Patrick Henry is hosting a Fine Arts Festival Week featuring a dance recital, visual art reception, fine arts performances, a jazz band concert, choir concert, guitar concert and orchestra concert. The schedule is as follows:
·       May 19, 7pm -dance recital (auditorium)
·       May 20, 9am-8 pm Visual Arts Reception (Fine Arts Hall)
·       May 23, 7pm-Choir Concert (Auditorium)
·       May 24, 7pm-Guitar Concert (Auditorium)

·       May 20, lunch period-Fine Art’s Performances (Outdoor Senior Café’)
 
The evening performances are free and open to the public.
