EVENT: NBA 76ers Visit Addison and Fleming Students to Promote Reading

DETAILS: Addison middle school students will have a unique opportunity to meet NBA players from the 76ers team during a special assembly at 2:30p.m. on Friday. The players will promote the NBA sponsored national reading program. During the assembly, 80 passes to the Eagle Scout Clinic hosted by the 76ers will be given away to students and 10 tickets to the 76ers game vs. the New Jersey Nets which will be played at the civic center. The 76ers will also make a visit to William Fleming students during a special assembly on Tuesday, October 5 at 9 a.m.

EVENT: RCPS Students Learn How to Manage Money and Life Experiences During Saturday Workshop

DETAILS: Noel C. Taylor will host its annual event, “Reality Store” on Saturday, October 2, 2010, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. The reality store is a financial workshop designed to provide students with real life experiences about personal finance. All middle and high school students have been invited to attend. Free lunch is provided and all students are eligible to win door prizes. This year’s Reality Store is sponsored by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and VPI Extension.

DETAILS: Patrick Henry student Judi Jackson is among the opening acts for the Mavis Staples Show. Staples will perform at the Jefferson Center on Sunday, October 3rd. Jackson is a drama/music student at PH who also performs with a local band.

EVENT: State Celebrates Student Advanced Placement Achievements at Patrick Henry High School

DETAILS: The Virginia Advanced Study Strategies (VASS) is hosting a 2010 Kick-Off celebration at high schools throughout the state including, Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke. The goal of the event is to celebrate the wonderful results students achieved on the various 2010 AP math, science, and English exams. The state will also be delivering incentive checks to students, teachers, and administrators to help recognize their success. State legislators from both the House of Delegates and Senate have been invited to participate in the school celebrations.
EVENT: Adopt-A-Classroom Surprise Visit to Hurt Park Elementary Teacher
SCHOOL: Hurt Park Elementary

DETAILS: OfficeMax representatives will surprise a Hurt Park Elementary teacher with over $1,000 in classroom supplies on Tuesday at 10 a.m. The surprise visit is part of the nationwide Adopt-A-Classroom and OfficeMax “A Day Made Better” Program. The purpose of the event is to recognize the challenges teachers face in often paying for school supplies out of their own personal finances.

EVENT: Students Hold Ribbon Cutting Ceremony To Celebrate their New Grandin Court Gymnasium

DETAILS: Grandin Court Elementary students will hold a special ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate their non-traditional style new gymnasium. The new facility is dome shaped and is made of membrane fabric which is more cost efficient. The total price of the gym project is about $400,000-nearly half the amount of a traditional gym. The ribbon cutting ceremony kicks off on Friday at 1 p.m.
EVENT: Highland Park Elementary Walk-a-Thon

DETAILS: Highland Park Elementary School will kick-off their annual Walk-a-Thon on October 8, 2010 from 9am-2 p.m. During this time, each grade level will walk and help raise money for the school. The event corresponds with the division-wide wellness initiative, 10,000 Steps a Day, which began in September. The wellness initiative runs throughout the month of November.
EVENT: WVEC banquet at Madison Middle School

DETAILS: The annual Western Virginia Education Classic (WVEC) banquet will be held 6 p.m. at Madison Middle School. St. Paul’s College and Bowie State football players that will be playing in the WVEC game on Saturday will be attending the Friday night dinner. Dr. Rita Bishop, TAP organizers and city dignitaries will also attend the banquet. RCPS Students will attend the banquet as well and have a unique opportunity to meet with college athletes.

DETAILS: St. Paul's College will face Bowie State (Md.) University on Oct. 9, in the 11th annual fundraiser football game. The classic benefits Project Recovery, a Total Action Against Poverty (TAP) program to help high school dropouts get an education.
