Late last week, Roanoke City Public Schools’ administrators were alerted that standard procedures had not been followed with the sale of outdated computers from the division. The hard drives from some of the outdated computers were not removed prior to the sale. As a result, personal employee information may have been compromised. Anyone employed by the division in November 2006 could be affected, which is about 2300 employees. To address the issue, RCPS is taking the following steps:
• A letter with more detailed information will be sent this week to employees who may be affected.
• A hotline will be created for employees to call with questions/concerns. The hotline will be available within 36 hours of this release. As soon as the number is available, it will appear on the district’s website; it will also be included in the letter to employees.
• Free credit monitoring services will be provided to affected employees.
• The division will work closely with the Roanoke City Police Department to provide assistance to employees.
RCPS administrators are reviewing existing protocols and implementing additional procedures to prevent future incidents.
