EVENT: William Fleming Football Team Plays on UVA Football Field Today
SCHOOL: William Fleming High School

DETAILS: William Fleming football players will have the opportunity today to be exposed to Division 1 college football facilities when they play their scrimmage game on UVA's campus. Coach Lee Johnson says it's a wonderful experience for both athletes from Fleming and Henrico County's Deep Run High School to be able to play each other on UVA's football field and be exposed to the campus lifestyle. Fleming football players will be leaving from the school at 10am today to travel to UVA for the scrimmage game.

EVENT: City Manager Keynote Speaker for "Blessing of the Schools"

DETAILS: City Manager Chris Morrill will be the keynote speaker for this year's Blessing of the Schools Event. Congregations in Action also known as CIA will host the event at William Fleming High School on Sunday, August 22 at 4 p.m. CIA is a volunteer group made up of churches committed to meeting the needs of RCPS students. The goal of the Blessings of the Schools event is to recruit more churches to get involved and adopt Roanoke City Public Schools that need mentoring, tutoring and volunteer support for students. All churches and community organizations interested in volunteering with Roanoke City Public Schools are invited to attend the Blessing of the Schools event.

EVENT: 2010 Convocation

DETAILS: Superintendent Rita Bishop will present her vision for the 2010-11 school year during the convocation for all teachers and faculty. State, city and school elected officials will be guests at this year's event. The convocation will be held Thursday, August 26 at 9am in the Roanoke Civic Center.

EVENT: Back to School Extravaganza
SCHOOL: Patrick Henry High School
DATE/TIME: August 28, 2010, 9-11 a.m.
DETAILS: Parents and students will have the opportunity to get free school supplies at the 8th Annual Back to School Extravaganza. The event will be held on Saturday, August 28 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Patrick Henry High School.
The Back-to-School Extravaganza prepares Roanoke City students and their parents for the start of the school year. They will receive information about free and reduced lunches, health clinics, after school programs, and PTA memberships.
Representatives from Roanoke City's elementary, middle and high schools will be on hand to answer questions, as will coordinators from programs for special education and adult/continuing education.
A bag of free basic school supplies will be distributed to every child who attends the Back-to-School Extravaganza and presents their invitation postcard.
Transportation will be provided from seven of Roanoke's housing communities. Roanoke City Public School buses will depart from the front of each Community Center beginning at 8:30 a.m., leaving on the half-hour and returning on the hour.
Most of the school supplies distributed to students come from the Q-99 Pack the Bus event.
