Roanoke City Public Schools (RCPS) has identified 441 homeless students so far this school year. That number is down about 91 from this time last year.
Our Help the Homeless Fund is preventing families from becoming homeless. To date, the school system has spent $7,082 assisting 52 families (109 students). The fund pays for things like an utility bill or rent to prevent evictions. The funding is being used to fill the gaps after all other community resources have been exhausted.
Homelessness can take on different forms. Some of our students live in shelters. Others live in hotels or are doubling up with our families. Put another way, these students don't have a permanent residence. There are a number of ways you can help.
