Peer Mediation Program We are proud to announce that Hurt Park Elementary will offer peer mediation services to students again this year. Peer mediation is a way for students to resolve their disputes and work through their problems without relying on adults to do it for them. Students are referred to peer mediation by teachers, school staff, or self-referral. Students meet with a peer mediation team to work towards solutions, while the school counselor monitors their progress. Peer mediators receive extensive training at the beginning of the school year using materials developed by The Conflict Resolution Center and Blue Ridge Behavioral Healthcare Prevention Services. Students participate in activities and role-plays to gain skills in active listening, non-verbal communication, conflict styles, using "I" messages, and impartiality. By having this program at Hurt Park, we hope to teach all students to problem-solve effectively, and to create a peaceful learning environment. If you come in contact with any of our peer mediators tell them how proud you are of their hard work! |
