Course Description: Canvas has a new tool!  Nearpod is icing on top for interactive presentations and assessments. Teachers can create multimedia presentations including draw it (students annotate directly on a slide), collaboration boards, and more.  Participants in this recertification course will learn how to create engaging lessons for their students using Nearpod.  They will also learn how to add Nearpod lessons to their Canvas courses as an external assignment.    
Assignment: Participants will be required to complete the following: complete tutorials in the Canvas Modules, find a lesson in Nearpod and add it to their library, create 4 lessons with at least 4 slides, and document a time log.

Course Description: Imagine a class were “la-la land” is boring compared to the real world class. Using formative assessment strategies essentially eliminates hand raising and cuts down on day dreaming. In this class we will explore web-based resources that will simplify all student response activities and promote student engagement.    
Topics will include SMART Learning Suite, Kahoot, Quizizz, GimKit and more!   
Assignment: Create 10 original games using the resources mentioned above. At least one game from each resource must be created.  Document time log.

Course Description: To prepare students for a test, we should be asking them to PULL information OUT of their brains, rather than trying to PUT concepts INTO their long-term memory. The very act of being quizzed actually helps students learn. Why not include low-stakes assessment as part of your everyday instruction?  

Assignment: In this course the student will learn about a study/learning method called Retrieval Practice. The student will use what they learn about Retrieval Practice to Plan and Create technology activities and lessons they will implement in their classroom.

Course Description: Canvas has been a definite game changer in more ways than one. In this course we will explore a variety of free web-based resources to level up the creativity and engagement for our virtual learners. Participants will learn how to take a link and generate embed code to gamify their Canvas modules.  
Assignment: Create or embed 10 gamified activities for Canvas courses and document a time log.

Course:  Third Times the Charm:  Tips and Tools for Teaching in the 3rd Nine Weeks

Course Description: Do you need to new ideas to teach both virtually and in-person?  This 3
rd 9 weeks, will be new and exciting! Join us to learn simple tips such as the rule of thirds to teach both groups.  We will also share tools such as break out rooms in Teams and interactive sites to make learning meaningful for everyone without having to reinvent the wheel.  We will share tips on behavior management as students transition and ways to communicate with parents about how student are progressing.   
Assignment: Teachers will share a Canvas module (1 week of lessons) with the instructor demonstrating how they are using blending learning and highlight the tools shared with their students.  Teachers will also need to complete a time card of hours.

Assignment: Teachers will work through a series of assignment tasks. These tasks will be designed to practice with the different elements and features of Flipgrid. Teachers will create three Flipgrid Topics.

Course:  Back to the Basics:  Learning How to Use Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Share in Office 365

Course Description: This will be an in-person back to the basics class to provide you with the best support to master Office 365.  The class is also broken down into 2 days to help you learn without being overwhelmed.  
Session 1:  Navigating Office 365, Creating 3 Types of Word Documents, and Creating a PowerPoint Presentation 
Session 2:  Finding your files in Office 365 and sharing the files, Creating a Basic Excel Spreadsheet, and how to schedule Teams meetings  
 Assignment: Teachers will be required to create the following documents and share them in Office 365. 

  1. Word document – worksheet or letter
  2. Word document – Newsletter or Flyer
  3. PowerPoint – containing 10 slides and at least 1 transition
  4. Excel – a time card with formulas to add their time for this class

Course:  Canvas  – Creating Templates and Personalizing

Course description: Learn to personalize your Canvas courses and create a template to use in all of your courses. Participants will use hyperlinks, embed videos, create buttons and simple bitmojis (not interactive) to use in a Canvas courses. Creating a course with easy navigation will be one of the main topics in this class.
Assignment: Create a template using a simple bitmoji or other visual to use in your course. The template must include buttons and multiple visuals to enhance the appearance of the course.

Course Description: You will create lessons using SMART Learning Suite and SMART Notebook that you can share with your students at school or have them complete at home. The lessons will include content you create and activities from the SMART Learning Suite. The lessons can be added to Clever or Teams as a link so students can access from anywhere.  
Assignment: Aligning the lessons with SOLs you teach, you will create multiple page notebooks for your students. You will have to spend at least 19 hours creating content in addition to the one hour in class to receive credit. Use the lessons with your class and write a reflection.

Course Description: Teachers will learn to create collaborative and creative breakout activities using OneNote. These exciting lessons are fun for students and helpful with reviewing and learning new content. The digital breakouts can be completed at home or at school.  
Assignment: Participants will create at least two OneNote Breakouts with the following requirements:   

  • Create 2 digital Breakouts using OneNote.  
  • Each Breakout will have at least 5 sections. 
  • Use at least 5 of the resources from the digital resource page 
  • Each Breakout should have the SOL being taught listed.

Course Description: Teachers will learn to use the apps in Office365 to create lessons. The class will cover the basics, but also move on to some of the more advanced uses of the apps in Office365. These can be used in the classroom or shared with students at home.  
Assignment: Teachers will be required to create a Word document, PowerPoint, Sway, Quizzes using Forms and share these through OneDrive. Teachers will have to upload images into their documents.

Course Description: We all love to use those cool online assessment websites. Kahoot, GimKit, Quizizz, Quizlet and Flippity are some of my favorites. Many times the question creation component can be overwhelming but did you know that each of these tools has a spreadsheet component to make creation easier? Just enter the questions and answers into a spreadsheet, upload and you are ready to go!  Let’s explore the world of spreadsheet templates to make our lives easier. 
Assignment: The students will use spreadsheets to organize review questions. The students will create spreadsheets to upload to the web tool of their choice. At the end of this course, participants will have several online assessment ‘games’ ready to go for their students.

Participants in this recertification course will learn to create engaging lessons for their students using content from their OneDrive, incorporate Immersive Reader, integrate Forms and other Office 365 tools within their Nearpod lessons.  Participants will also learn to utilize Flipgrid in their Nearpod lessons.  A basic knowledge of Nearpod and Office 365 will be beneficial for participants in this class. 
Assignment: Participants will be required to complete the following: complete tutorials in the Canvas modules, create five lessons with at least four slides, add an assignment in their Canvas course using at least one Nearpod lesson and complete a course time log.

Course: A (VERY) Basics of Coding Class (ABC)

Course Description: The very basics of computer programming can be learned by playing games. Today’s technology can teach our students (and us) complex computer logic by masking it as levels and challenges! 
Assignment: In this class we will learn the basics of coding using the games, unplugged activities, and lesson plans provided on the website code.org. We will also learn about the VA Computer Science SOLs for our grade level and use them to help build Computer Science into our lessons and routines.
