Roanoke City Public Schools (RCPS) has identified 399 homeless students so far this school year. That number is down about 100 from this time last year. However, the school system typically sees a spike after the holidays, and this year is no different. RCPS has identified more than 50 new homeless students since Winter Break.
Our Help the Homeless Fund is preventing families from becoming homeless. To date, the school system has spent $6,803 assisting 49 families (104 students). The fund pays for things like an utility bill or rent to prevent evictions. The funding is being used to fill the gaps after all other community resources have been exhausted.
Homelessness can take on different forms. Some of our students live in shelters. Others live in hotels or are doubling up with our families. Put another way, these students don't have a permanent residence. There are a number of ways you can help.
